Is Your Noisy Open Plan Office Driving You to Distraction?

If the answer to this question is yes then it is time to take action this New Year.

Improving your open plan office doesn’t have to add to the stress instead embrace change and introduce some minor improvements to make your 9-5pm more productive.

Where to start – Create some personal space ..

Consider using Office Screens to create private workstations or cubicles, not only will they allow for greater privacy within the office but they help to reduce unwanted distractions and also help to improve productivity.

Office Screens are widely available in a choice of sizes, colours and fabrics and are a simple, non-permanent, cost effective way of dividing space in large offices, classrooms and study areas.

Here are Panel warehouse we have prepared a basic guide to help you start planning your new, more organised work space

Points to consider …

  1. Design: Begin by deciding if you just want to divide desks or if you want to create a cubicle that includes extra space around the desk so employees have room for storage such as drawers or shelves, if so take appropriate measurements and then build this into the plan.
  2. Size: So that you can prepare a simple plan measure the available floor space and surrounding area. Take measurements of desks (width, depth and height) the size of the chair and any other furniture to be included.
Look at the height of the room – remember – choosing tall Office Screens may give you greater privacy but they can also make rooms with a low ceiling feel too closed in and can make staff feel too overwhelmed.  Sit at the desk and take measurements before deciding on a height.
  3. Facilities: Take into consideration plug sockets, partitions, windows, doorways and fire escapes make sure that your design doesn’t include an unnecessary obstructions and that there is a natural flow through the room.
Important: Office Screens should not be placed too close to sources of heat such as radiators or portable heaters and under no circumstances placed near naked flames.
  4. Usage:  – Standard Office Screens such as the ones from manufacturer Panel Warehouse have a pinnable surface so consider if colleagues will need to attach things to them such as wall planners, company information or personal items such as posters or photographs. Build these Office Screens into your plan and think about the height and width needed for each cubicle.
  5. Privacy: Some employees may require greater privacy than others due to the nature of their work, for example they may work with confidential documents and will prefer not to be over looked, in this instance Standard Office Screens would be preferable and should be considered in the design.
  6. Visibility & Security: Consider if you would like staff to be able to see each other or be seen by visitors coming into the office. If this is a priority then you may want to include some Glazed Office Screens into your plan.
If natural or artificial light is a concern and you want to partition a space within a dimly lit room without compromising too much of the available light then this type of screen would be considered the most suitable of the two types.
Most Glazed Office Screens such as the ones available from Panel Warehouse have a Perspex window built into them, Perspex makes the screen safe to use and lightweight so that they can be easily moved as and when required.
  7. Environment: Think about the look, feel and atmosphere that you want to create as this will have a significant impact on how people will feel about working in their new surroundings.
Office Screens are available in huge choice of colours and fabrics, these can range from conservative blues and greys through to vibrant reds and greens.  As many manufacturers offer something to suit every taste and working environment the choice can seem good but sometimes daunting.  If you are unsure about which colour to choose it’s always best ask the supplier for advice – many suppliers such as Panel warehouse are only too happy to help and offer free fabric swatches to help you make a decision before you buy.
  8. Delivery: Office Screens are large items and unfortunately sometimes they can be mishandled during the delivery process. Occasionally, as with most deliveries they can be received damaged – always check before signing for a delivery that the box is not damaged in anyway, looking for signs such as dents in the packaging or crumpled corners. If you are in doubt or you suspect damage always sign for damaged.  Once you have unwrapped your delivery and checked the items report any damages immediately to your supplier.  Here at Panel warehouse we label all our consignments to reflect this and ask that any customer who receives a damaged item reports it immediately and provides a photograph by email if possible.  This helps us to process any claims and provide replacements swiftly and to the customers satisfaction.
  9. Assembly: Now that you have your Office Screens you will be able to put your design plan into action.  Many Office Screens such as those from Panel Warehouse require minimal assembly and are simple to install, they require no technical knowledge or specialist tools.  Choosing non-permanent Office Screens such as those from Panel Warehouse means that you now have the flexibility and control over your own office restructure allowing you to add on to and reorganise your space time and time again.
Most suppliers will offer assembly advice, here at Panel Warehouse we offer full customer service support and also online video assembly guides both on our website and on You Tube.
  10. Enjoy your new workspace:  Now that your Office Screens are installed staff and colleagues can begin to personalise their workspace and make it their own. Enjoy!
