What Does PDF Stand For?
If you are adding graphic designs to display stands then it is likely that your supplier will ask for images in PDF format. This is a type of file which has been developed by Adobe systems and is widely used within the publishing industry. PDF actually stands for portable document format and is one of the most popular means of transferring designs. It became popular as it limited the problems found when sending original files via different platforms. The file size of the graphics are compressed which again makes it easier to send and receive, and also makes it easier for the printing house to manipulate and match to large areas of display boards and display panels.
There are a wide range of versions and standards of PDF with the most often used being email, PDF/x-la 2001 and Press Ready. Press Ready has certain settings that can be selected when creating high quality PDFs that are then used in printing. The settings can then be modified according to specific reproduction requirements or to accommodate a print house. There is a limited amount of latitude that can be tweaked when necessary.
PDF/X-la is used in the main for press advertising into the larger publishing houses. It again has specific settings that have tighter rule to avoid legal problems by embedding fonts within the file itself. Smallest size file or email is a form of PDF used to proof graphics via email and online. It makes the file size smaller but the quality is compromised.
